Erin Trefry
Post Meridiem
May 30 - August 29, 2020
Lowell Ryan Projects is pleased to present Post Meridiem, an online exhibition of new paintings by Erin Trefry that consists of ten, oil on linen and canvas works that are all fourteen by sixteen inches in size. These small-scale paintings continue Trefry’s exploration of sentiment, memory, and figurative investigation. The artist’s impastoed gestures, in shades of green, black, white, and yellow with flashes of red, depict shoes that have been worn by members of Trefry’s family signifying a form of portraiture.
The exhibition’s title is a reference to time, more specifically the second half of the day. Shoes, perhaps more so than any other form of apparel, mold to the wearer’s feet and create a record of their movements. This body of work depicts a variety of footwear including tennis shoes, high heels, boots, and clogs that reference different aspects of one’s life. The artist’s interest in dance, and its ability to activate space by telling a story through movement, is also alluded to through the positioning of footwear and the animation of her brush strokes. While shoes have historically carried the weight of different superstitions, Trefry believes these articles of clothing can function as talismans, serving as vessels for memory and time.
